Nonesuch at 60: David Bither on Bob Hurwitz
"Recently we announced a variety of activities that would take place in 2024 to celebrate Nonesuch's 60th Anniversary," writes Nonesuch Records President David Bither in the Nonesuch Journal. "But I would like for a moment to reflect on the contribution of the individual most responsible for what Nonesuch has come to stand for: Bob Hurwitz, who ran Nonesuch from 1984 to 2016 and was our Chairman Emeritus from 2017 to 2023."

Kronos Quartet's John Sherba, Hank Dutt to Retire From Group
Following Kronos Quartet's 50th-anniversary season, longtime members John Sherba (violin, right) and Hank Dutt (viola) will retire from the ensemble at the end of June. Between now and the end of June, Sherba and Dutt will perform more than 20 shows with Kronos, culminating at the ninth annual Kronos Festival at the SFJAZZ Center. Kronos will enter its sixth decade with two new members: violinist Gabriela Díaz and violist Ayane Kozasa.

Carminho Talks Poor Things in Billboard
"I was very happy to see how beautiful the scene was, how intense," Portuguese fado singer Carminho tells Billboard of her cameo in Yorgos Lanthimos's Academy Award–nominated film Poor Things, in which she performs for Emma Stone's character. "I thought this is the transition of Bella's character from a child to a woman. It was very beautiful to see that Yorgos used the fado to make that, because there’s such a feeling of sadness in fado."

Steve Reich's Different Trains / Electric Counterpoint at 35
It was 35 years ago: the first recording of Steve Reich's Different Trains and Electric Counterpoint, performed by Kronos Quartet and Pat Metheny, respectively, was released on Nonesuch. "A work of such originality that 'breakthrough' seems the only possible description," the New York Times exclaimed of Different Trains, which went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Composition. Pitchfork named the record one of the 200 Best Albums of the 1980s.
